Time Scouts: Interview with Scott Mann of the Permaculture Podcast on Utopia

A rattlesnake slithers on the hot summer rocks amidst the serviceberry, birch, and blueberry.

I was fortunate to be interviewed about the story, Utopia: A Permaculture Vision, by Scott Mann of the permaculture podcast recently, about utopian literature through the ages, Utopia: A Permaculture Vision, and how narrative can play a role in the permaculture design process. You can find a link to listen to the podcast on Utopia at the Permaculture Podcast here. You can also download the podcast here, or on spotify.

The title of the podcast comes from a quote from Bill Mollison’s autobiography, Travels in Dreams:

“When we design, we are always building for future floods, future fires, future droughts, and planting a tree a few inches tall that will be future forest giants, throw future shadows. Future populations will need future soils and forest resources, shelter, security. So somebody needs to range ahead in time, scout out the next century. We are not daydreaming. We are time scouts., one of the co-originators of permaculture”

Our discussion covered a lot of ground, so if you are curious, please do check it out, and let me know what you think!

Scott’s podcast is one of the most valuable repositories of information and knowledge on Permaculture in the world. If it seems like hyperbole or exaggeration on my part, I assure it is not, I stand behind my claims. The archives of this Podcast are perhaps the best Permaculture Library, accessible to all, for free, if you haven’t checked them out yet, please do. Also if you like Scott’s work, please consider supporting him at the Patreon. I have been a supporter for years and do my best to encourage him to keep up his work spreading the good word.
